[Bears notes: ‘Robert Drummond killed himself by accident two or three days after he wrote this letter (by a foulling piece)’]. 297. Letter [ ] Roediger to [James] Skene [of Rubislaw]. Asks Mr Skene to help the Roediger family, as he has done before, because they are very poor and in debt. Hanau, 31 May 1795. 298. Letter [ ] Dern to Mr Skene (at Monsieur G. Hestermann’s at Hanau). Offers to sell books. Frankfurt, 15 March 1802. 299. Letter Jean George Remond to James Skene of Rubislaw (at Signora Patricia Moir’s, Strada Babumae, Roma). Friendly letter touching on the uncertain political situation in Europe. Geneva, 12 December 1802. 300. Letter Johan Daniel Barensfeld to Henry Jardine, W.S., Edinburgh. Relates to a trunk containing a gun etc., sent by James Skene of Rubislaw to Jardine via Nic. de Tongre (Cologne), Jaq. Martin (Rotterdam) and Robert Anderson (Leith). Hanau, 26 March 1803. 301. Letter Joseph Man, Reichsfreiher von Lutgendorf, to James Skene of Rubislaw. Mentions the "ugly affair" with Lady H. and Lord S.; apologises for the emotional tone of a letter to Skene on this topic and invites Skene to visit Lutgendorf. Edinburgh. 8 February 1805. 302. Letter as 301. Unable to accept invitation; keeping trunks for Skene provided that he does not have to pay for them. (?Hamburg), 1805. 303. Letter Le Comte de Thunn and Le Comte de Trogoff, to James Skene of Rubislaw. Thanks for letter and very useful itinerary. Edinburgh, 22 June 1806. 304. Letter Johan Daniel Barensfeld to Colin Mackenzie of Portmore. Informs Mackenzie that James Skene has received a delivery of wine; financial matters; offers to send wine. Hanau, 11 July 1807. 305. Decree awarding the custody of Eliane Marie Genevieve Legrand and Suzanne Marie Marcelle Edmee Legrand, minors, the children of the late M. Frantz Legrand and his wife, Madame Thiphaine Marie Lucie Germaine de Boisboissel, jointly to their mother and her second husband, M. Richard Macdonald Lucas. The members of the judicial family council which made the award were: paternal line, M. Charles Louis Legrand, retired sea captain of Toulon, the children's grandfather; M. Jean Legrand, engineer, of Neuilly-sur-Seine, the children's uncle, represented by M. Victor Morazzini, retired sea captain of Toulon; M. Alphonse Boyer, retired, sea captain of Toulon. Maternal line: Mme. Thiphaine Marie Lucie de Boisboissel of Paris, represented by M. Ferdinand Sauvan, retired sea captain of Toulon; M. Richard Macdonald Lucas of Paris, represented by M. Mouttet, retired solicitor of Toulon; Ives Marie Jacques, le Comte de Boisboissel, colonial infantry officer of Paris, the children's uncle, represented by M. Ernest Gervais, retired sea captain of Toulon; Henri Alexis Desmazures de Sechellis, Principal Naval Commissioner at Ajaccio, represented by M. Georges Champfleury, Naval Commissioner, 1st Class, of Toulon. Attached to the decree are copies of the five proxies from the Records Office of the Justiciary of the Peace, Toulon (1st and 2nd cantons), 15 February 1821. 306. Letter [ ] to James Skene of Rubislaw, advocate. Requests attendance at a meeting of the contributors to the Edinburgh Academy. Edinburgh, 7 May 1823. [On the back is a draft letter from Skene to a friend in Hanau who is to receive Skene's sons into his household. Undated.] 307. Letter John Daniel Barensfeld to James Skene of Rubislaw. Mentions visit of Mr Jardine a relative of Skene's to Hanau; invites Skene to stay at his house during a proposed visit. Hanau, 24 October 1823. 308. Letter Comte de Mondragon to James Skene of Rubislaw. Thanks for hospitality and itinerary which has proved most useful on a recent tour of Scotland. Lanerik, 22 July 1824. 309. Letter Mirebeau de 1'Etang to Mrs Skene of Rubislaw at Versailles. Social letter mentioning Mme Russell, Marquis de Forbin and Lady Elizabeth Lowther. Aix, 24 January 1828. 310. Letter from [ ] D’Harviville to James Skene of Rubislaw. Mentions help given by D'Harviville to the poor of Edinburgh in gratitude for the welcome extended by the city to himself and to his compatriots. Holyrood House, 7 February 1832. 311. Copy letters (l) William Forbes Skene to the magistrate of the City of Posen. Seeks certificate that two of his ancestors Robert and David Skene, who left Scotland for Poland in 1575 and 1586 respectively were citizens of Posen, n.p. n.d. (2) [ ] Guderian, mayor of Posen to W. F. Skene. Can only testify to David Skene (Skin); about form of certificate. Posen, 15 September 1856. 312. Copy letter [ ] Guderian, mayor of Posen to W.F, Skene. Has now proof of citizenship of Robert Skene; about form of certificate. Posen, 10 October 1856. 313. Letter Josef Man, Reichsfreiherr von Lutgendorf, to [James] Skene of Rubislaw. Complains bitterly about behavior of one Lady Hamilton demanding £100; mentions Mr Oliphant, Mr Denovan and Dr. Schaffer. Undated [circa 1805.] 314.
