Alasdair Gray Archive.

 Record Group
Identifier: Alasdair Gray Archive
The literary and personal archive of Alasdair Gray (1934-2019), the celebrated Glasgow artist and writer. Gray first began building his archive with the Library in 1984, when then curator Stanley Simpson notes in a memo "Alasdair Gray called to see me yesterday, bringing a haversackful of papers, including manuscripts, typescripts and proofs of '1982, Janine', which he wants to give to the Library". So began a fruitful relationship for both parties, which lasted until his death in 2019, and continued beyond with the Library's acquisition of the final tranche of his archival material (Acc.14602) in 2022. The archive includes original manuscripts, typescripts and other working papers for all of his published works, from his earliest poetry and playscripts all the way through to his final great work, his version of Dante's 'Divine comedy'. Working papers for every novel, short story and poetry collection are available, often with notes and comments provided by Gray as he prepared them for delivery to the Library. There are sizeable files of personal and professional correspondence with friends, agents, editors and fellow writers and artists as well as extensive collections of notebooks, ledgers and diaries from across his life. There are several originals and prints of artworks, including all of the original artwork for 'Lanark' and several other of his books (Acc.10191), as well as collections of posters designed by Gray, including student posters and theatre posters for many of his own plays and plays by others. We also hold annotated finished copies of several of his own books, and a wide variety of printed material either produced by Gray or relating to his life and work.
