'Ruskin Bible'.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.1.1.1

Scope and Contents

The manuscript, written in Northern France, takes its name from John Ruskin who greatly admired it (`The Works of John Ruskin`, edited by E T Cook and A Wedderburn (London, 1903-1912), volume xii, page 144). It is described in the exhibition catalogue `Treasures from Scottish Libraries` (Edinburgh, 1964), number 20.

Sir John Sinclair’s `Statistical Account of Scotland, 1791-1799` (Wakefield, 1978), x, page 294 refers to a note with the manuscript which stated that it was used ‘in the great church at Dunfermline in the reign of David I’. This note does not survive and there is no evidence in the manuscript itself to connect it with Dunfermline, though there are traces of a deleted inscription (folio 474 verso). The same source states that the manuscript later belonged to [Nicolas Joseph] Foucault (1643-1721) and was bought by ‘a Scotch gentleman’ at the sale of his library. Any evidence of this was lost when the manuscript was rebound in the early 1840s, but there are three inscriptions by Richard Astrevaulx, 1648 (folios 209, 210, 264) which suggest that the manuscript was in France at that date. For a discussion by Roger Middleton of the dispersal of Foucault’s library, see `Les Manuscrits de Chrétien de Troyes`, edited by Keith Busby and others (Amsterdam, 1993), ii, pages 130-131, 204-205.

Arrangement

The order of contents is that usually found in French bibles of the period, with the common set of prologues (see N R Ker, `Medieval Manuscripts in British Libraries ii` (Oxford, 1977), pages 210-212). The prologue to St Luke’s Gospel follows chapter I, verse 4. The biblical books are followed (folio 441) by the dictionary of Hebrew names beginning ‘Aaz apprehendens’ (F Stegmüller, `Repertorium Biblicum medii aevi`, Madrid, 1950-1979, number 7709).

Historiated initials, usually of eight or more lines, precede the general prologue, all the biblical books, and psalms 1, 26, 38, 52, 68, 80, 97 and 109; they extend into the margins with blue and pink bar borders which often incorporate birds, animals and grotesques. The initial I of Genesis contains seven roundels depicting the Creation above a Crucifixion scene (folio 4). A large initial L showing the tree of Jesse precedes St Matthew’s Gospel (folio 357). There are scenes of fighting men, musicians and an acrobat, and hunting in the bottom margins of folios 1 and 4. Smaller illuminated initials containing foliage and occasionally grotesques, also with bar borders, occur at the beginning of the prologues and in the dictionary of Hebrew names. Other initials throughout are in red or blue with decorative marginal penwork. Running titles are in red and blue; the title of Acts was given as ‘Hebre’ and has been corrected. Catchwords are contained within black and green grotesque beasts.

Collation: 1-29[sixteen], 30[ten]. Catchwords on gatherings 1-27. 2 columns of 52 lines, written below the top line.
