Illuminated manuscript of `De civitate Dei` [The City of God] by St Augustine.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.1.1.2

Scope and Contents

A manuscript of the City of God, executed in Paris in 1503 for the Cardinal d’Amboise, Archbishop of Rouen, and probably intended for presentation to his brother, Louis, Bishop of Albi. The manuscript was originally in two volumes, with the division at the end of Book X. As a result of this division, folios 149v-150v are left blank, but have been lined and ruled. There are two folios missing, so that the beginning of Book X is wanting. Laborde states that the work was probably written by a scribe named Cyprien. The work is written in littera textualis, in two columns of 40 lines each.

There are 21 miniatures in total. Each book is preceded by a miniature occuping approximately half the page, though the miniatures for Books I and XI, intended as frontispieces for the two original volumes, are larger. The miniatures are from the atelier of a Parisian artist, Jean Pichore, who is known to have worked on other manuscripts for the cardinal. It is probable that Pichore delegated some work to assistants (cf. the miniature to Book XI). The present manuscript seems to be closely based on another copy of the same work, Bibliotheque Nationale, MS. Français, 23-24. The borders, which decorate the folios containing chapter headings and the miniatures, contain foliage, flowers, and acanthus leaves, mainly in gold, blue, red, and green, together with animals and grotesques. At the foot of each illuminated page Laborde has identified the coat of arms, palé d'or et de gueules de six pièces surmounted by a crozier, as the coat of arms of Louis, Bishop d'Albi. It has been suggested that the borders are the work of Jean Serpin.

Each book, except Book X, is prefixed by a table of contents, each of which is decorated with a half border and illuminated floriated initial.

Quire signatures are occasionally visible in the bottom margin on the recto side of the folios, although most have been cropped. The signatures are a combination of letters and roman numerals, and are more evident towards the end of the volume.

Custodial History

Executed in 1503 by order of Cardinal Georges d’Amboise, Archibishop of Rouen, and probably designed by him to be presented to his brother Louis Bishop of Albi. Louis bore the family arms with the difference that the crozier was behind the shield, as is represented in the manuscript.

After the death of the Bishop of Albi in 1503, the history of the manuscript is uncertain until its appearance at the sale of the library of Count MacCarthy Reagh in 1815. It was acquired soon after by the Faculty of Advocates.

The previous shelfmark assigned to the manuscript by the Library of the Faculty of Advocates was '18.a.2', since superseded.

Physical Description

Vellum.

The volume was boxed in 1964, and rebound in 1970 in red morocco leather. The spine has raised bands with gold tooling, as well as a gold-tooled library stamp, shelfmark, and title which reads: 'AUGUSTINUS DE CIVITATE DEI'. The fore-edges of the leaves bear a design of the coat of arms of the House of Amboise, palé d'or et de gueules de six pièces.

The older binding has been retained and is boxed separately from the manuscript itself. The old binding, of the early 19th century, is red paper over cardboard. The back is red morocco and has raised bands and gold tooling, as well as a gold tooled title which reads: 'SANCTUS AUGUSTINUS DE CIVITATE DEI MANUSCRIT SUR VELIN'.

The old binding has two marbled endpapers and four paper flyleaves. One of the paper endleaves has pencil inscriptions of the old shelfmark, the new shelfmark, and a watermark which reads: 'FIN'. On the recto side of one of the marbled endpapers there is an ink inscription which possibly reads: 'sc/r/r'.
