Scope and Contents

For the suggested date of the manuscript see folio 283. Sections (xxvi) and (xxxvii) are in different, later hands.

The contents of the manuscript are as follows:

(i) `Regiam Maiestatem`, in 4 books of 41, 75, 37, and 57 chapters with table at the beginning of each book (folio x). Book 4 is in Latin. Folio 47 blank.

(ii) Various laws (folio 48).

(iii) `The Lawis of the burgh` in 120 chapters with table at the beginning (folio 49).

(iv) `The form of the halding of the aire of chalmerlany` in 26 chapters with table at the beginning (folio 66).

(xxvi) Acts of Parliament, bull of Paul III, tax roll, and rules of procedure concerning the foundation of the College of Justice, 1532-1535 (folio 298). This is written by two different and slightly later hands (changing at folio 323). At the top of folio 305, before the bull, is the couplet `Ecce nouus presidens nouus ordo nouique ministri./Plebs noua strata noua stilus et omne nouum.` Folios 326-344 lost.

(xxvii) `De judicibus`, in Latin, in 167 chapters (169 in the table) with table at the beginning (folio 345).

(xxviii) `Leges forestarum`, in Latin, in 91 chapters with table at the beginning (folio 397). Folio 416 verso blank.

(xxix) `Processus curie purpresture’ in 4 chapters (folio 417).

(xxx) `The process of ye breiff of perambulatioun` in 17 chapters (folio 419).

(xxxi) `The form of maner of halding’ (folio 421 verso).

(xxxii) `Statuta David Broyss regis`, in Latin, in 8 chapters (folio 426 verso).

(xxxv) `Iter Justiciarie`, in Latin, in 11 chapters (folio 430).

(xxxvi) `The maner of halding of ane Lordis courte` (folio 435). Folios 436 verso, 437 blank.

(xxxvii) Acts of Parliament of James VI, 1578 (8 chapters) and 1579 (3 chapters, incomplete at the end) (folio 438). This is in a different and later hand.

Folios 38, 73, and 85 are repeated; 85a is two sheets pasted together; 326-344 are lost; 370-379 are passed over. Collation uncertain. Ruling in ink. 1 column. 39-41 lines. Ruled area 200-205 x 105-115 mm. No signatures or catchwords.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Paper (watermark on folios iv-83 a crown, not in Briquet; thereafter not watermarked). Full leather binding, early 18th century, rebacked 1931.

Custodial History

Presented to the Advocates` Library in 1709 by Henry Malcolm, Minister of Balingry. The name `James Ross` is on folio iii, that of `Mr Robert Fletcher` on folio iii verso, both late 16th cent. Former pressmark: A.3.22.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
