Copies, 1727 or before, in various hands, of papers concerning Mary Queen of Scots and her reign, apparently collected by James Anderson.

Scope and Contents

Although not published in the work, James Anderson appears to have collected the material comprising this manuscript for his ‘Collections Relating to the History of Mary Queen of Scotland’ (Edinburgh and London, 1727-1728). A draft of articles of co-partnery between Anderson, his son-in-law John Leitch, and his son Patrick, to publish the Collections is at folio 21.

Among the papers copied are:

the marriage articles of Mary and François II, 1558 (folio 13 verso);

protest of François II to Queen Elizabeth, with her reply, April, 1560, and Elizabeth`s reasons for arming some of her citizens, 1562 (folios 137, 116, 131; all taken from the printed copies, published at the time);

act of the Privy Council of Scotland for minting silver pieces, 1565 (folio 22);

letters to Sir Nicholas Throckmorton from Maitland of Lethington, Queen Mary (not in Labanoff`s collection), the Earls of Moray and Morton, Lord Ruthven, Mr P Melvill (?Sir Robert Melville), Queen Elizabeth, and the Privy Council of Scotland, 1566-1567 (folio 148);

notes of events, 1566-1571 and 1573 (folios 64, 58);

`The forme of the assurance`, 1569 (folio 26);

accusations against and defence of Mary, 1572 (folio 22);

letter of John Leslie, Bishop of Ross, to Henri III", undated (folio 20);

`Ane Brieff Declaration of the wiced and ungodlie proceding of certane inveterate persons conspirators against the Queens Matie ... `, undated (folio 90);

`A Short Treatise of Succession`, with a reply (folios 94, 108);

list of contents of British Museum MS.Cotton.Calig. C.1 (folio 158; most of the contents of this manuscript were printed in James Anderson, ‘Collections Relating to the History of Mary Queen of Scotland’ (Edinburgh and London, 1727-1728)); and,

a letter of the Earl of Melrose to James VI and I, ?1620 (folio 144).

`Ane Brieff Declaration ...` (folio 90) is a copy of British Museum MS. Cotton. Calig. C.2, folio 106.

The original of the letter of the Earl of Melrose to James VI and I (folio 144) is Adv.MS.33.1.1, Volume IX, number 62. The letter was published in ‘Melros Papers’ (Abbotsford Club, 1837), page 376.
