Papers concerning the erection of baronetcies in Nova Scotia.

Scope and Contents

The papers are part of the Balcarres collection. They had become separated from the rest of the collection, but can be identified from the original inventory.

The contents of the manuscript are as follows:

(i) Copy of a letter of James VI to the Privy Council, 1624 (folio 1). The letter is printed in `The Register of the Privy Council of Scotland`, 1st series, volume xiii, page 616.

(ii) Copy of undertakings by the newly-created baronets, of payments to Sir William Alexander, Lieutenant of Nova Scotia, [1624] (folio 4).

(iii) Form of royal letters creating a baronet of Nova Scotia, [?1624] (folio 5).

(iv) Copy of royal letters patent for the issue of a charter under the Great Seal, creating baronetcies in Nova Scotia, [?1625] (folio 7).

(v) Alphabetical list of knights baronet of Nova Scotia, with the dates of their creation, [post 1707] (folio 25).

(vi) Note concerning the creation of Sir Robert Gordon as a baronet in 1625, [early 18th century] (folio 30).

A copy of the original inventory to the Balcarres papers, signed by Thomas Ruddiman, then Underkeeper of the Library, is in MS.3581, folios 6-7.

Custodial History

The papers were presented to the Advocates Library in 1712 by Colin, 3rd Earl of Balcarres.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
