Memoirs of Edward Robarts, an ordinary seaman, describing his travels and adventures in the South Seas from 1797 to 1824, particularly his seven year stay on the Marquesas Islands.

Scope and Contents

The memoirs give an account of the ‘manners and customs’ of the natives together with a vocabulary of the Marquesas language.

A short poem, not in Edward Robarts` hand, has been written in pencil on the back flyleaf.

Custodial History

An inscription at the end of the volume records: ‘This Narrative is given to the care of James Hare Esq., M.D. by me Edward Robarts the writer and true owner of the Acct. of the Marquesas Isles, Calcutta, July 14th, 1824’.

Bibliography

The volume was published as ‘The Marquesan Journal of Edward Robarts 1797-1824’, Pacific History Series, number 6 (Canberra, 1974), edited by Professor Gregory M Dening. Apart from division of the text into paragraphs and chapters and addition of punctuation, the manuscript and printed versions correspond.
Several extracts from the journal also appear in ‘Raffles of the Eastern Isles’, by C E Wurtzburg (London, 1954), pages 81, 109.
