 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.18.6.12

Scope and Contents

Most of the leaves are palimpsest, but the underwriting is illegible; it may be from the same manuscripts as that in Adv.MS.18.7.8 (pricking from the original manuscript survives on folios 3+6, 9, 16+23, 17+22, 26+29, 34+35, in one or both edges of the text-frame; the width of the ruled area was 172 millimetres in folios 3+6, 17+22, 26+29, 192 millimetres in folio 9.). See 'Notice et extraits d'un manuscrit d' Edinbourg', 33 and what follows.

The contents of the manuscript are as follows:

(i) 'Satires' by Persius. iii.105-iv.33 are lost. The text is a normal ϕ one, agreeing rather more often with P than with α; inside the class ϕ it agrees overall most frequently with L (Leiden, Bibl.Publ.78, 10th century), followed fairly closely by G (Bern, MS.257, 10th century), W (Munich, lat.330, 10th century), and N (Munich, lat.14498, 11th century); in i-iv however it agrees most with W. (Folio 1).

(ii) 'Fables' by Avianus. The preface is followed by the verse 'lector non fabulas spectes, sed tende magis quid' (inserted between lines by the first hand) and the epigram 'Anth.Lat.26' (also placed before Avianus in other English manuscripts (Cambridge, Trin.Coll.0.3.57; Oxford, Bodl.Auct.F.2.14; Oxford, Bodl.Rawl.G.III), in Vat.Reg.lat.1424, and in Paris.lat.8093, cf. 'Les fabulistes latins', volume 3, 55). The following additional verses (cf. 'Les fabulistes latins', volume 3, 53-54, etc.) occur: xii.13-14, xiv.15-16, xxxi.13-14. (Folio 14.)

(iii) 'Cato novus', a version in leonine hexameters of the 'Disticha Catonis'. From ii.111 to the end is lost, except that iv.307-308 are placed at the beginning (repeated by a later hand in the space left vacant for the heading). The order is that of C (Vienna, Nationalbibl.898, 13th-14th century). (Folio 29 verso.)

(iv) Unidentified sapphic stanza, printed in 'Bibliotheca Patrum Latinorum Britannica', ii.3, 8; and in 'Notice et extraits d'un manuscrit d'Edinbourg`, 40. (Folio 32.)

(v) 'Gesta Ludovici imperatoris' (edited by A Vernet in 'Notice et extraits d'un manuscrit d'Edinbourg', 40). Two variants, 8 ‘nates’ and 16 ‘luduuico’, are not noted by Vernet. (Folio 32.)

(vi) 'Exemplarii uersus' from the 'Epistles' of Horace (i.1.7-9, 11, 15, 17, 19-29, 33-40, 47-48, 53-54, 57, 60-61; i.2.51-53; i.3.28-29, 33-35; i.4.8-13; i.7.29-33, 44-45; ii.1.13-16). (Folio 33.)

(vii) Poem of William, canon of St Hilary, against the antipope Clement III (edited by James Usher in ‘Veterum epistolarum Hibernicarum sylloge’, 138; reprinted in ‘Patrologia Latina’, cl. 1573, and by H Böhmer in ‘Monumenta Germaniae historica’, ‘Libelli de Lite’, iii, Berlin, 1897, 703). This is apparently the unique manuscript. (Folio 34 verso.)

(viii) 'Versus maligni angeli' (cf. 'Notice et extraits d'un manuscrit d'Edinbourg', 44). (Folio 34 verso.)

(ix) Marbod, 'Vas fractum' (‘Patrologia Latina’ clxxi. 1685; cf. also 'Notice et extraits d'un manuscrit d'Edinbourg', 45 number 1). Variants: 1 ‘rome’, 2-3 ‘saphiro’, 4 ‘devarios’, 6 ‘hoc]vas’, 7 ‘cophino’, 9 ‘abstrahit’, 10 after 11, 10 ‘abstractum’. (Folio 35.)

(x) Two 'differentiae' (edited by A Vernet in 'Notice et extraits d'un manuscrit d'Edinbourg`, 45). (Folio 35.)

(xi) Mock epitaph of a cleric Bernand (edited by A Vernet in `Notice et extraits d`un manuscrit d`Edinbourg`, 45). (Folio 35 verso.)

(xii) Epigram (edited by A Vernet in `Notice et extraits d`un manuscrit d`Edinbourg`, 46). (Folio 35 verso.)

(xiii) Three riddles (the first in ‘Anthologia Latina’ 738a, the second and third in `Notice et extraits d`un manuscrit d`Edinbourg`, 46). (Folio 35 verso.)

(xiv) 'Bella Parisiacae urbis', iii, by Abbo. This manuscript agrees most frequently with H (British Museum, Harl MS.3826, 10th century), R (British Museum, Royal MS.3 A VI, 13th century), C (Cambridge University Library Gg.V.35, 11th century), and S (Amiens, MS.110, 13th century). On the Old English gloss see ‘Anglo-saxon England’, volume 15, pages 73-89, and ‘Filologia Germanica’, volumes 28-29, pages 313-349. (Folio 36 verso.)

(xv) 'Aenigmata' by Symphosius (‘Anthologia Latina’ 286), preface and number 1-52.1; a manuscript of the D class. (Folio 36.)

In (i)-(iii) headings and initials of each line are in green, red, and silver on red. The initial of each poem in (i) and the first initial of (ii) are foliate. In (v)-(viii) headings and initials of alternate lines are in red. In (xiv) headings are in red and some of the text in light brown. In (xv) headings and initials of each stanza are in red. (i)-(iii) are written by one hand, (iv)-(xiii) by several contemporary hands, (xiv)-(xv) by a rather later hand.

Custodial History

On folio 1 is the inscription of Thorney Abbey (`liber succentorie thorneye`; see also the pen trial on folio 35 verso, `R abb(as) torne(ye) W s(alu)t(em)’. Bound with Adv.MSS.18.7.8 and 18.7.7 (the former certainly, the latter probably from Thorney) it was in the library of Henry Savile of Banke, 1568-1617, and has his name `Henricus Savile’ and his cipher for `ex dono patris` on folio 1; it is number 7 (a)-(g) in the catalogue of his library printed by J P Gilson in ‘Transactions of the Bibliographical Society’, ix, 126 and what follows (cf. also ‘The Manuscripts of Henry Savile of Banke’, 18). The ex-libris of Sir James Balfour is on folio iii, dated 1654. It was number 185-187 in the sale of Balfour`s books in 1698. There is an erased inscription on folio 35 verso. Former pressmark: A.6.4. The manuscript was bought by the Advocates’ Library in 1698.
