Palimpsest, made up of at least five English manuscripts of the 8th to 11th centuries, overwritten in England in the late 11th century and belonging to Thorney Abbey.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.18.7.8

Scope and Contents

Underwriting:

Such identification as has been achieved is due to N R Ker, in ‘Edinburgh Bibliographical Society Transactions’, iii, 169 and what follows; and E A Lowe, ‘Codices Latini Antiquiares’, supplement. Ultra-violet photographs of folios 1 + 8, 4 + 5, 9 + 16, 28 + 31, 19 + 22, 3, 30 recto, and 26 + 33 are in MS.8494, folios 1-15.

Folios of the manuscripts (i), (ii), (iv), and (v) have generally been turned sideways and folded to form sheets of the new volume; those of (iii) have been re¬used in their original position; all have been trimmed as necessary.

(i) `De Trinitate` by Augustine (‘Patrologia Latina’, xlii.839 l.20-840, l.58), on folios 16 recto + 9 verso, 16 verso + 9 recto (folios 4 + 5, 28 + 31, probably 1 + 8, and possibly 2 + 7, and Adv.MS.18.6.12, folios 2 + 7, 34 + 35 are from the same manuscript but the text has not been identified). The hand is an Anglo-Saxon majuscule of the 8th century. ‘Codices Latini Antiquiares’ 1689. Pricking with a triangular awl preserved on the outer edge of the text-frame (it may also have been on the inner edge), Ruling not visible. 2 columns. 33 lines (31 survive). Width of column 100 millimetres (calculated written area 265 x 215 millimetres).

(ii) Passion of St Lawrence (‘Analecta Bollandiana’, li, 91 l.18-92 l.29), on folios 22 recto + 19 verso (folios 17 + 24, 25 + 34, and Adv.MS.18.6.12, folios 3 + 6, 4 + 5, 16 + 23, 17 + 22, 26 + 29 may be from the same manuscript). The hand is an Anglo-Saxon pointed minuscule of the first half of the 8th century. This is probably the oldest manuscript; it has several readings, mostly good, not cited by Delehaye; otherwise it agrees most often with C (Chartres, Bibl.Mun.MS.144, 10th century). ‘Codices Latini Antiquiares’ 1690. Pricking with a circular awl on outer and inner edges of the text-frame. Ruling not visible. 2 columns. 21 lines. Written area 228 x 172 millimetres (each column is 77 millimetres wide).

(iii) A service book, perhaps a missal, on folios 12 + 13, 23, 30 (possibly also folios 3, 6, 10 + 15, 14, 18, 20, and Adv.MS.18.6.12, folios 14, 24 + 31, 32, 33, 37). Written in Caroline minuscule, of the early 11th century.

(iv) ‘Homiliae in Evangelia’ by Gregory the Great (‘Patrologia Latina’, lxxvi.1300 l.56-1301 l.51), on folios 26 recto + 33 verso, 26 verso + 33 recto. The hand is an Anglo-Saxon minuscule of the late 8th century. ‘Codices Latini Antiquiares’ 1691. Pricking with a flat awl on outer and inner edges of the text-frame. Ruling not visible. 1 column. 23 lines. Written area 195 x 157 millimetres.

(v) Unidentified writing on folios 27, 32, and Adv.MS.18.6.12, folios 8 + 15, 9, 10 + 13, 11 + 12.

Upper writing:

(i) `Orationes in L.Catilinam`, 1-3, by Cicero. (Folio 1 verso.)

(ii) `In Ciceronem et inuicem inuectiuae` by Sallust. The text is of the β type, close to that of Cambridge, Trin.Coll.0.8.6, and British Library, Harl.MS.3859, both 5.xii and probably English. (Folio 28.)

(iii) Pseudo-Atticus. `Regula formatarum’. The title in the manuscript is ‘HΠ̄A ATISI HΠ̄I SΩANCTANTINΩAITANI ΦΩΡMATA SAΠ̄AΩ CLVIII’, i.e. `Ep(istol)a Attici Ep(iscop)i Constantinopolitani formata cap(itu)lo CLVIII` badly transliterated into Greek. Cap.12 differs widely from the printed version. (Folio 33 verso.)

Headings mostly in red and silver, that on folio 1 verso in red and green with a large foliate initial. Occasional words in the text are wholely or partly in red. Some initials and other letters are infilled with red and silver.

The ex libris of Sir James Balfour is on folio 1, dated 1637 (Denmilne number 57 on folio i). It was number 178-180 in the sale of Balfour`s books in 1698. Former pressmark: A.5.25.
