15th-century book of hours, according to the Use of Paris, written in France.

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows:

(i) Calendar in French, in red, blue and gold (folio 1). Entries in gold include Saints Genevieve (3 January), Stephen (3 August), Lupus and Giles (1 September) and Denis (9 October). St Martial appears in red on 26 July.

(ii) Sequences of the Gospels (folio 14).

(iii) `Obsecro te` (in the masculine form), `O intemerata` (in the feminine form) and suffrages to St Sebastian. (folio 20 verso)

(iv) Hours of the Blessed Virgin Mary (folio 30).

(v) Hours of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (folio 105).

(vi) Penitential Psalms, Litany (including St Ursin), and prayers (folio 113). The prayers include one for `nostrae congregationis fratres sorores parentes amicos benefactores et recommendatos nostros` (folio 131 verso). The same prayer occurs again at the end of the Office for the Dead (folio 195).

(vii) Hours of the Cross (folio 132 verso).

(viii) Hours of the Holy Spirit (folio 139).

(ix) Office for the Dead (folio 145).

(x) The Fifteen Joys of the Virgin and the Seven Requests, in French (folio 196).

(xi) Suffrages, prayers and indulgences (folio 205 verso). These include devotions to Saints Apollonia (folio 210 verso), Oportuna (folio 223 verso), Ursula (folio 226) and the Holy Sacrament (folio 228); the prayer of St Bernard, `Per te accessum habeamus` (folio 225 verso); `Stabat mater` (folio 229); the hymn `Salve mater salvatoris` (‘Repertorium hymnologicum’, 18051) (folio 232 verso); and the Seven Verses of St Bernard (folio 226 verso). Folios 224-225 are out of place and should follow folio 231.

Written by two scribes: the first wrote folios 1-104, 113-215, 224-225 and 229-234; the second folios 105-112, 216-223 and 226-228. With one exception, the large miniatures are of the usual subjects: St John the Evangelist (folio 14), scenes from the birth and childhood of Christ (folios 30, 55 verso, 69, 76, 81, 86, 91), the Coronation of the Virgin (folio 99), David in prayer (folio 113), the Crucifixion (folio 132 verso), Pentecost (folio 139), a burial scene (folio 145), the Virgin and Child in glory (folio 196), and the Trinity (folio 202). A miniature of Joachim and Anna before the Golden Gate at the beginning of the Hours of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (folio 105) is by a different artist.
