Dupuy book of hours, produced in Flanders in the late 15th century.

Scope and Contents

(i) Calendar in French in gold, blue and red (folio 1). It includes Saints Lubin, bishop of Chartres (14 March and 15 September), Pavasce (16 June), Mello (22 October) and Maclou (15 November).

(ii) Sequences of the Gospels (folio 7).

(iii) `Obsecro te` and ‘O intemerata` (folio 10 verso).

(iv) Hours of the Blessed Virgin Mary, according to the use of Rome (folio 15). Matins of the Hours of the Cross and of the Holy Spirit are inserted between Lauds and Prime.

(v) Penitential Psalms, Litany and prayers (folio 49).

(vi) Office of the Dead (folio 60).

(vii) Suffrages, including the ‘Stabat Mater’ (folio 79).

There are ten large miniatures: St John the Evangelist (folio 7), the Annunciation (folio 15), the Crucifixion (folio 27 verso), Pentecost (folio 29), the Nativity (folio 30), the flight into Egypt (folio 35), the Purification (folio 37), the Adoration of the Magi (folio 40 verso), the Coronation of the Virgin (folio 44) and Job and his friends (folio 60). Leaves which probably contained miniatures are missing at the beginning of Lauds, Terce and the Penitential Psalms. There are geometrical borders containing fruit, flowers and foliage throughout. Three-line initials in blue and white on gold and red grounds; smaller initials and line-fillers in gold on blue or red grounds. Ruled in red ink. Folios 14 verso and 47 verso-48 verso blank but ruled.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Vellum. Binding of purple velvet with two metal clasps engraved with the monogram RD.

Custodial History

The inscription ‘Japartiens a renée dupuy 1590` appears on folio ii verso with a note about her family (she was the great-aunt of the Maréchale d`Estrées who died in 1714). Another late 16th- or early 17th-century inscription, ‘Voyla mon nom margaritta dupuy’ is inside the front cover. The manuscript was bequeathed to the Advocates’ Library in 1894 by R N Hayward, Edinburgh.

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
