The poems are written in two different hands and at the rear of the volume there are several pages written in cypher or shorthand.

The manuscript was bought by the Advocates’ Library, circa 1798.

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.

Bibliography

Most of the poems are apparently unpublished but folios 3, 87 verso, 91 verso-93 and 94 are printed in ‘Fugitive Scottish Poetry’, 2nd series, edited by David Laing (Edinburgh, 1853); and a poem of Sir George Etherege (folio 122) and a verse letter to him (folio 136) are printed in his ‘Poems’, edited by J Thorpe (Princeton, 1963), pages 7 and 40.
