Custodial History

The papers appear to have been at some time in the possession of Sir Robert Douglas, a letter to whom, 1756, is at folio 29. Later they were in the possession of George Chalmers whose bookplate is pasted inside the front cover. They were later in the library of Sir Thomas Phillipps. Phillipps number 11537 is written in pencil inside the front cover: the item to which this refers is described as "MacFarlane`s Collections for the Scotch Families of Agnew, (etc.) 2 Vols. f. ch. s. xviii. ½bd", which is a description of Adv.MS.20.1.12. It is not clear whether the present manuscript was the second volume, or whether Adv.MS.20.1.12 was previously in two volumes; at any rate, they were sold together as lot 700 at the sale of Phillipps`s manuscripts at Sotheby`s in June 1893.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
