Scope and Contents

The contents of the manuscript are as follows:

(i) `The Castilian proiect against England with advertisements for preuentinge thereof`, addressed to James I (folio 1). The author, who had served in the West Indies, was in favour of supporting the Netherlands in a war with Spain. The work is undated, but refers to Philip III as the young Spanish king (folio 27 verso). Another copy of the work (Adv.MS.34.2.10, folio 1) states that it was written by F W shortly after James`s accession to the English throne.

(ii) `A short Viewe to bee taken of greate Brittaine and Spaine` (folio 41). A comparison of the wealth, defences, etc. of the two countries, circa 1621.

(iii) `Reasons coniecturall of warr and truce betwixt the spaniards and Archduke on the one partie, and the Lords states gennerall on the other`, ?1621 (folio 47).

(iv) `For the Freeinge of the Palatinate by armes`, circa 1621 (folio 56). This concludes with a list of items for the consideration of the Council of War.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Bound in 17th-century brown sheepskin, gilt-stamped with the royal arms.

Custodial History

The manuscript contains the cipher of Sir James Balfour of Denmilne (folio 59) (Denmilne number 66), and signature of Charles Arnot in a 17th-century hand (folio i). It was bought by the Advocates’ Library in 1698.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
