Almost all the entries in the printed book have been summarized in the manuscript, which also contains details not recorded in the printed book; many of the entries are partly in English. A later and more detailed entry on Robert Bodie has been written (in English) in the same hand on a small sheet of paper (folio 32) tipped into the volume. The frequent unintentional omissions made in the copying of the manu¬script have been supplied in the same hand in the margins.

The dates 2 March 1729 (inverted) and 19 April 1729 appear at folios 2 and 194 verso respectively (the beginning and end of the ‘Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Scotorum’) and presumably indicate the dates between which it was copied. This is followed by: additional entries on Scottish writers, and notes on the monastic houses of Scotland, excerpted from Books I and II of ‘Apparatus ad Historiam Scoticam’ (folio 195); a list of Dempster’s works, copied from ‘Scotorum Scriptorum Nomenclatura’ (folio 206); and additional entries on Scottish writers (folio 208) copied from entries ‘subjoined in an old hand’ at the end of the copy of ‘Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Scotorum’ from which the excerpts in the main part of the manuscript were made. Some of these amend entries in the body of the text.

A few additions and corrections have been made by Robert Mylne, antiquary, on the title page and in the margins of some of the leaves of the text; it is not certain whether the hand in which the text was written is his or not. The pagination, which is presumably in the same hand as the text, has been ignored.

The volume was bound or rebound apparently about 1819, the date or the watermark of the endpapers.
