Typescript drafts of act 1 of ‘Shall we join the ladies?’ by Sir James Matthew Barrie, with corrections and revisions in the hand of the author.

 Series
Identifier: MSS.6625-6635

Scope and Contents

The drafts represent six, rather late, stages of composition. They are not entirely consecutive and would seem to be the remains of a total of nine immediately preceding the published text. MSS.6625 and 6626 represent the first of these stages; MSS.6627 and 6628 the second; MSS.6629 and 6630 the fourth; MSS.6631, 6632, and 6633 the fifth; MS.6634 the sixth; and MS.6635 the eighth. A stemma, with explanatory notes, has been inserted in MS.6625. The drafts are of interest as showing Sir James Matthew Barrie's method of perfecting a play, and his occasional use, in doing so, of more than one copy at a particular stage. Thus, after MS.6626 went to the typist Barrie made alterations in MS.6625. These he transcribed in due course into MSS.6627 and 6628, the clean copies typed from MS.6626. The situation is more fully described in the notes to the stemma.
