Letter-book of Field-Marshal George Wade, when "Commander in Chief of all his Majesty's Forces, Castles, Forts and Barracks in North Britain".

 Item
Identifier: MS.7187

Scope and Contents

The first half of the volume contains Field-Marshal George Wade's orders to various officers concerning troop movements from his arrival in Edinburgh in June 1725 to September 1726, first in connection with the Malt Tax riots, then with movements into summer and winter quarters. This portion also includes records of two courts-martial for desertion, and of a reprimand of an absent officer. This is followed (folio 81) by thirteen letters from Wade to Henry Pelham, Secretary at War, and Lord Townshend, Secretary of State, dated from July 1726 to August 1728, giving reports of his plans and progress in military organisation and roadbuilding in Scotland. The final section (folio 110) consists of accounts kept by Major Scipio Duroure, of expenditure on roads and bridges in the Highlands for the year 1732.
