Scope and Contents

The discourse begins at folio 8 being preceded by the Epistle and preface (folio 1 verso). Leslie`s account was used by William Camden in his ‘Annales ... regnate Elizabetha ... ad annum 1589’, there being several copies in manuscript, but it remained unpublished until it was printed with an introduction by James Anderson, Writer to the Signet, in his ‘Collections Relating to the History of Mary Queen of Scotland’, volume iii. Anderson used this copy as his text: another copy, British Library, Cotton MS Caligula C.4, has additions which Anderson printed at pages 243-252 of his edition.

The volume was repaired and bound or re-bound about 1815.

Custodial History

The manuscript was presented `Jun.18.1704. To the Hon[???] the Dean and Faculty of Advocates at Edinburgh ...` by William Nicolson, bishop of Carlisle (later archbishop of Cashel), whose presentation note is written on a piece of paper pasted to folio 1, the Faculty`s accession note being written in Thomas Ruddiman`s hand at folio i.

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
