  • Related Materials

For charters and other formal documents from the collection see Ch.B.1353-2335.

  • Bibliography

The collection has been extensively used in ‘Jacobite Lairds of Gask’ by T L Kington Oliphant (London, 1870); ‘Oliphants in Scotland’ by Joseph Anderson (Edinburgh, 1879); and ‘Oliphants of Gask’ by E Maxtone Graham (London, 1910).

  • Other Finding Aids

Before the collection came to the Advocates’ Library, a very full inventory had been compiled, a copy of which is placed as Adv.MS.82.9.14. The original order, which may be seen from the inventory, has been disturbed as little as possible. Papers up to circa 1750 have been thoroughly indexed in the Advocates’ Manuscripts Cumulative Index. Later papers have been indexed more selectively, but the rejected slips have been preserved as Adv.MS.82.9.16.

  • Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.

  • Custodial History

The collection was bequeathed to the Advocates’ Library by T L Kington Oliphant of Gask (died 1902) and received in 1919.
