Letter of Hugh Miller.
Scope and Contents
A letter, 1834, of Hugh Miller in which he discusses the contents of several boxes of fossils collected around Cromarty. The letter dates from a significant period in the evolution of Miller`s geological theories. The recipient is George Anderson, Inverness (confirmed from file copy of letter in Hugh Miller`s letterbook in New College - information from Dr Michael Taylor, National Museums of Scotland). With a covering letter, 1948, regarding provenance.
Dr Taylor`s investigations have since revealed that there are 3 original copies of this letter, all in Hugh Miller`s hand, though a close comparison has still to be made. There is the fair copy in the aforementioned letterbook and a copy with Inverness Museum and Art Gallery (INVMG:000.532), bearing franking marks and evidently sent separately from the fossils, as `back-up`. The NLS copy was probably enclosed with the boxes of fossils, hence the lack of an address. The fossils to which the letter refers are also in the collections of Inverness Museum and Art Gallery.
