 Fonds
Identifier: Acc.13747

Scope and Contents

Papers relating to the military tribunal of Alexander Frame Smillie, and his imprisonment at Wormwood Scrubs as a conscientious objector during the First World War, 1918.

The papers include letters and statements detailing the arrest, trial and imprisonment of Alexander (Alex) Smillie. Alexander was the son of Robert Smillie, trade unionist and politician who became President of the National Council Against Conscription when it was formed in 1915. A letter from Robert to Alexander expresses support for his son, and confirms his life-long anti-militarist views.
