The contents include: A letter, 1562, of William Maitland of Lethington to the Earl of Leicester, expressing his wish for continued friendship between Elizabeth and Mary (folio 1); A letter, 1581, of the Jesuit, William Crichton, describing his efforts to have James VI brought up as a Catholic (folio 6); A letter, 1621, of Michael Drayton to William Drummond of Hawthornden, published in ‘The library’, 5th series, volume xxi (1966), pages 328-330 (folio 21); Short Latin poems by Andrew Melville, dated 1594 and possibly in his own hand, which do not appear among his poems in Arthur Johnston, ‘Delitiae poetarum scotorum’ (Amsterdam, 1637) (folio 44); A letter, 1683, of James Renwick, the Covenanter (folio 97); Resolutions of the House of Commons, 12-16 December, 1648, most of which are printed in the ‘Journals of the House of Commons’ (folio 107).
