Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Sermons of Adam of Dryburgh. Some of these were printed from another manuscript in W de Gray Birch, ‘Sermoties fratris Adae’ (Edinburgh, 1901) and J P Migne, ‘Patrologiae curvus complettis ... latina’, volume cxcviii. For details, see N R Ker, ‘Medieval manuscripts in British libraries’, volume i. A sermon of Thomas à Kempis, written in a sixteenth-century hand, has been inserted (folios 81-83). It is printed in Thomas à Kempis, ‘Opera omnia’ (Cologne, 1759) pages 67-73. (Folio 1.)

(ii) Sermon of Fulgentius, bishop of Ruspa, 'De nativitate domini'. Printed in ‘Patrologia Latina’, volume lxv, 726-729. (Folio 102 verso.)

(iv) Sermon attributed to St Augustine, 'De sancto Stephano'. Printed in ‘Patrologia Latina’, volume xxxix, 2147-2149. (Folio 106.)

(v) Sermon attributed to the Venerable Bede, 'De sancto Johanne evangelists'. Printed among the works of Peter Damian, ‘Patrologia Latina’, volume cxliv, 866-875. (Folio 109.)

(vi) 'De festo sancte Agnetis secundo.' The latter part of the 'Epistola ad Demetriaden' of Pseudo-Ambrose. Printed in ‘Patrologia Latina’, volume xvii, 741-742. (Folio 114.)

(vii) The life of St Hugh of Lincoln by Adam of Eynsham, in the long abbreviation. See, ‘Magna vita sancti Hugonis’, edited by D L Douie and H Farmer (London, 1961-1962), where this is MS.O. (Folio 115.)

(viii) The life of Adam of Dryburgh by a Carthusian of Witham. Printed by André Wilmart in ‘Analecta praetnonstratensia’, volume ix (1933), pages 209-232. (Folio 216 verso.)

(ix) 'Sermo in die sancto Pasche.' Begins 'Patres reverendi et confratres in doi-nino carissimi, duo movent me specialiter'. (Folio 221.)

Written by several hands in littera textura with the exception of the sermon of Thomas à Kempis in section (i), and section (ix), which are in current hands. Initials in red and blue.

The manuscript was written in an English Carthusian house, and has the ex-libris of the London Charterhouse in an early sixteenth-century hand (folios i verso and 222 verso). For its later history, see ‘Medieval manuscripts in British libraries’ by N R Ker, volume i.

Collation: 1-9⁸, 10⁸ (+ 3 after 8), 11⁸, 12¹², 13¹⁰ (+ 1 after 10), 14-25⁸, 26⁶, 27⁸.

Catchwords parallel to the text and some signatures. The first four folios of some gatherings are numbered in Roman numerals, and the gatherings of section (vii) originally bore the signatures a-n.

Ruling in ink.

Folios 83 verso and 216 recto are blank. 2 columns of 31 lines in (i)-(vii) and 34 or 35 long lines in (viii)-(ix).

The manuscript was bought by the National Library of Scotland with the aid of N R Ker, F.B.A., D.Litt., and the Friends of the National Libraries.
