This text is a condensed version of an earlier text (MS.10361), but contains all the engravings included in the earlier journal in a later, possibly a third, state.
Although the engraved title page is dated 1824, the manuscript interleaves were probably written in 1836 as the paper of the text is watermarked 1835. The item is inscribed 'Presented, by the author, to his much esteemed friend Alexander Thomson, of Banchory, Esq. A.D.1836' (folio 2), and a copy of a note (folio 4) from the Duke of Wellington, to whom Douglas wished to dedicate the work, is also dated 1836. The Wellington note suggests that this new version of the 1824 engravings was also intended for publication.
