Album of ‘Jacobite relics’, containing printed and manuscript material and portraits, formerly owned, perhaps started, by James Maidment, and containing additions made by a later owner.

Scope and Contents

The printed matter is recorded in the Catalogue of Printed Books. In addition to some forgeries, the manuscript material is as follows:

(i) Letter, undated, of John Stevenson, James Maidment's publisher, probably to Maidment (folio 2);

(ii) A version, in a hand of about Maidment's time, of part of the poem on Lord justice Clerk Whitelaw, 'Old Nick was in want of a lawyer in hell,' printed by Maidment in ‘A book of Scotish pasquils’ (Edinburgh, 1827), page 73 (folio 2 verso);

(iii) “Perth's Pænitentialls, transcribed Jan. 21, 1696”, heroic couplets (folio 11);

(iv) Order to the magistrates of Edinburgh to imprison Captain Neill McKloud and Charles McKinnone in the Tolbooth, for dangerous practices against the Government, 1703 (folio 12);

(v) 'Old Burnet lies, of late as wise as old St. Thom. Aquinas', poem, undated, on Bishop Burnet (folio 12);

(vi) 'Quædam carmina Dominum de Argyl respicientia, a seipso formata', transcribed 1696, in the same hand as (iii) above (folio 13);

(vii) Act of the justices of the Peace for the Shire of Edinburgh regarding Roman Catholics, 1709 (folio 17);

(viii) 'Lines made by the Master of Burlaigh to his sister', printed in Thomas G Stevenson, 'The bibliography of James Maidment’ (Edinburgh: privately printed, 1883), page 34 (folio 27);

(ix) “The King's good intentions & sentiments. By one fully instructed”, 26 November 1714, a Jacobite manifesto (folio 29);

(x) Address of Jacobites to Queen Anne, 26 November [?1713], regarding the removal of Prince James Edward from Lorraine, in the same hand as (ix) above (folio 30);

(xi) Two reports on a meeting of Jacobites at Aboyne, the raising of the standard on the Braes of Mar, and other activities, dated Dundee, 9 and 8 September 1715 (folio 34);

(xii) Letter, undated, of the Honourable Henrietta Dalzell of Barncrosh (folio 38);

(xiii) Royal letter, 1715, ordering the King's Advocate to summon Drummond of Logie (probably Thomas, 2nd of Logiealmond) and his brother William to find caution for their good behaviour (folio 39);

(xiv) Receipt, 1745, for excise-duty and protection given to Barbara Turnbull, brewer, and Mrs Pillans, brewer, respectively, in the name of Prince Charles Edward, Holyroodhouse (folio 78);

(xv) Letter, 5 September 1745, of Andrew Fletcher, Lord Justice Clerk, to Sir John Cope (folio 86b); there is a copy in Fletcher's hand in MS.295, folio 24;

(xvi) Letter, September 1745, supposed to be written by Lovat to Lochiel; it is not in Lovat's hand, and must be either a copy or a forgery (folio 102);

(xvii) Copies of a letter, 29 October 1745, of Lovat to Lord President Forbes, and of a petition of Lovat to the House of Lords, with the order given thereon by the Lords, 1746 (folios 104-106);

(xviii) Fragment of a letter to the Captain of Clanranald said to have been written by Flora Macdonald of Kingsburgh, but on doubtful grounds (folio 108);

(xix) Note to Maidment, 1845 (folio 111);

(xx) 'Our fathers of old took oaths as their wives' and other verses on the taking of oaths to King George, undated (folio 112);

(xxi) Plan of the battle of Prestonpans and strength of the Government troops, circa 1745 (folio 115);

(xxii) 'Jacobite song, from the recitation of Mrs. McLehose', being Burns's “Highland Widow's Lament”, with some differences from the version published in the ‘Works’, Centenary Edition (Edinburgh, 1896-1897), volume iii, page 184; and verses beginning 'Here Robie sits and writes his letters' (folio 123);

(xxiii) Copies of letters, 1744, of Alexander Robertson of Strowan to Glengarry (folio 128);

(xxiv) Letter, 1827, of Marshal Macdonald to the Chancellor of France (folio 152);

(xxv) Letters written to Harie Maule of Kellie, sometimes called 5th Earl of Panmure, by Viscount Arbuthnott, 1727, and the Earls of Orkney, 1731, and Leven, undated (folios 155-160b);

(xxvi) “List of the King's subjects lately come from Brittain at Avignon”, 24 July 1716 (folio 161);

(xxvii) Last speech of Major Donald Macdonald of Tir-na-dris, executed at Carlisle, 1746 (folio 163);

(xxviii) “Establissement d'un régiment dragon anglois”, ?Essen, 1706, on paper bearing the arms apparently of Berg or Jülich (folio 167);

(xxix) Queries addressed to Robert Jackson, British Resident at Stockholm, apparently in the House of Commons debate of 27 February 1718, on the question of trade with Sweden, with Jackson's replies (three drafts) (folios 168-173);

(xxx) Letter of James Stillie, bookseller, Edinburgh, 1891, regarding the forged Burns letters at folios 154b-c (folio 174).
