Scope and Contents

In addition to George Skene's journal there are notes of expenditure on the journey and of the mileage of part of the route (folio 1 verso); part of an anti-Hanoverian parody of the ‘Te Deum’, ?1742 (folio 34); and part of a diary, probably of Joseph Mackie, 1837 (folio 35).

At the end of the volume, inverted, are detailed accounts of expenditure on the journey of 1729 (folio 1 inverted) and recipes, medical and other (folio 3 inverted), including directions for the treatment of smallpox by Dr Clerk, 1733, Dr Stevenson, 1733, and Dr Jo Gordon, of the same period (folio 5 verso inverted). The name of Joseph Mackie occurs on folio 44 inverted, and there are accounts by Alexander Mackie, employed as a farm-worker at Kinellar and elsewhere, of his ailments and the treatments he tried, 1840-1841 (folios 34 verso, 41 verso inverted). In addition, there are some personal accounts, ?1827 (folio 22 verso inverted); lists of texts preached on at Kinellar, 1834-1836 (folio 23 inverted), and Kintore, 1838 (folio 40 verso inverted); lists of seeds and plants, 1837-1857, undated (folios 27 verso, 46 verso inverted); a poem (folio 33 verso inverted) and a song, "The Gordons hae the guidin' o't", 1837 (folio 47 verso inverted); the farewell address of Dr James Kidd, Minister of Gilcomston, 1833 (folio 45 inverted); and other notes of the nineteenth century.
