Custodial History

The tunes are principally copies which Donald Stuart Macdonald made from Angus Mackay's manuscripts of piobaireachd music, with a view to publishing the tunes not included by Mackay in his ‘Collection of ancient Piobaireachd’, an intention which he never carried out (see MS.3111, folio 1).

Although most of the tunes from Angus Mackay's manuscripts have since been published by Major-General Thomason in his ‘Ceol mor’, or by the Piobaireachd Society, this collection remains of interest in giving a slightly different interpretation of some tunes.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1939, by Alexander Morrison, M.B, C.M., Edinburgh.
