Scope and Contents

Included are:

(i) Commission by the Marquess of Montrose to Sir James Lamont, 14th of that Ilk, to raise the fencible men in the Sheriffdom of Argyll (contemporary copy), 1645 (folio 1);

(ii) ‘Articles of Capitulatione aggreed upon betuixt James Campbell of Ardkinlas ... and Sir James Lamount of Inuerin, Knight, ... annent the surrender and overgiving of his garison at Toward. At Auchevullin, the 3 of Junii, 1646’ (contemporary copy); the document is printed from another copy, in ‘An inventory of Lamont papers’, 'Scottish Record Society' (1914), pages 419-420 (folio 3);

(iii) Rental of the lands, teinds, etc., of Sir James Lamont, 1646 (folio 5);

(iv) Petition of Sir James Lamont to the English Commissioners in Scotland, that he and his friends and dependents, injured by the Marquess of Argyll, may be restored to their rights, [?1652] (folio 13);

(v) Similar petition, [?1656] (folio 15);

(vi) Note of the articles of Sir James Lamont’s 'dittay' at the trial of the Marquess of Argyll, dated 28 August 1662 (folio 17);

(vii) Passport signed by the Earl of Rothes in favour of Archibald Lamont, 15th of that Ilk, 1667 (folio 28);

(viii) Letter of Alexander Baillie relating to the meaning of 'Lamont', etc., 1706 (folio 42);

(ix) Letter of the Duke of Atholl regarding Rob Roy, who had escaped from the prison at Logierait, 1717 (folio 46);

(x) Rentals and expenditure accounts, 1729-1734 (folio 48).
