    The Society, which started as the Ladies’ Edinburgh Essay Society, became the Ladies’ Edinburgh Literary Society in 1872, and the Ladies’ Edinburgh Debating Society in 1881. These minute-books cover the life-time of the Society from its inception to its dissolution.

    The minute-books have been used in the compilation of ‘Ladies in debate’ (Edinburgh, 1936), edited by Lettice Milne Rae, which describes the personnel, interests, and activities of the Society.
