Scope and Contents

14th-century manuscript, possibly produced in Italy, containing a complete copy of the 'Eruditio regum et principum' of Guibert de Tournai, originally written in 1259 for King Louis IX of France. There is an inscription at the head of folio 1r which reads: 'Ludovico IX', refering to King Louis. The work belongs to the 'Mirrors for Princes' literary genre which aims to instruct kings and rulers on their behaviour.

The manuscript is the work of one scribe and is written in a rotunda bookhand littera textualis with 29 lines to a page.

The work runs from folio 1r to folio 58r.

Folios 58v-60r are blank, without ruling or lining.

On folio 60v there is a table of contents, probably also of the 14th century, but in a different hand. The hand in the table of contents appears to be in the same hand as the contemporary foliation.

Each folio has been lined and ruled in lead, recto and verso, except those listed above.

Pricking is occasionally visible in the gutter margin.

Chapter headings, incipits, and rubrics are in red.

The decoration consists of large initials in blue and red, alternately, with blue and red penwork extending down the margins. One initial is incomplete (folio 16v). There are occasionally paraphs in blue and red, especially towards the start of the volume.

Contemporary repairs to the vellum are evident throughout, although the manuscript is in good condition.

Horizontal catchwords are present on the following folios: 12v, 24v, 32v, 36v, and 48v.

There are infrequent marginal annotations in a later hand refering to the contents of the work.

A foliation in Roman numerals, probably in the same hand as the table of contents, runs in the upper right corner of each verso side, but is occasionally cropped.
