Scope and Contents

15th-century manuscript produced in France. The work can be dated to after 1458 due to the mention of Pope Pius II in the rubric of 'Oratio in die Cinerum'.

The manuscript is the work of one scribe and is written in littera textualis with 28 lines to a page.

The contents are as follows:

Vellum flyleaf with possible ownership inscription. Folio 1.

Vellum flyleaf with title inscription. This folio has probably been repurposed as it was once facing a leaf with a full illuminated border, as indicated by impressions left on the verso. Folio 2.

Giovanni Antonio Campano, 'Oratio in die Cinerum apud Pium Papam Secundum. Quia puluis es et in puluerem reverteris'. Folios 3r-24r.

Folios 24v-26v are blank, but have been lined and ruled.

Lactantius, 'De ira Dei'. Incomplete, wanting the first leaf, with loss of nearly all the text of the first chapter. Folios 27r-58v.

Lactantius, 'De Opificio Dei'. Folios 59r-90r.

Lactantius, 'De Fenice Ave'. Folios 90v-93r.

Each folio has been lined and ruled, recto and verso, in red.

There is a title inscription in a later hand on folio 2v which reads: 'Lactantius Firmianus De Opificio Hominis et Ira Dei'. This hand is possibly the same as that used for the ownership inscription on folio 1r.

On folio 3r there is an illuminated half-border. The design is modified French ivy leaves in gold, interspersed with wild flowers and fruit. The text is outlined by narrow bands of gold and colour at the top and bottom.

On folio 3r is a decorated initial, coloured lilac with white relief on a background of illuminated gold. The centre is filled with conventional ivy leaf and trefoil design in blue and lilac. There are further initials with similar floral decoration on folios 90v and folio 59r.

At the beginning of each of the separate works the initials are burnished gold on backgrounds of blue and lilac, with white relief and sprays of foliage in the margin.

The ordinary capitals are smaller, and are burnished gold upon backgrounds of blue and lilac with white relief tracing.

There are litterae notabiliores with yellow wash throughout.

Vertical catchwords are present on the following folios: 10v, 33v, 49v, 57v, 65v, 73v, and 89v.

Pencil inscriptions on the verso of the front endpaper indicate the lot number of the manuscript in the MacCarthy Reagh sale, and the current shelfmark of the item. The recto of the rear endpaper also has various pencil inscriptions which read, '30', '25', 'PA.', and possibly '35...'.

96 folios, as well as a marbled endpaper at either end of the volume.

One flyleaf has come loose since the manuscript was examined by Borland in the early 20th century. This loss was noted in 1980.

There is a leaf missing after folio 26, which is also noted in the MacCarthy Reagh sale catalogue of 1815, but library foliation in the manuscript is continuous.

Collation as recorded by Catherine Borland:

In gatherings of 8:

a-c⁸ (7 and 8 blank), d⁷ (wants 1), e-k⁸, l⁶ (5 and 6 blank)

Custodial History

There is a possible ownership inscription on folio 1r which possibly reads: 'Claudius Chasery'. The identity of this individual is unknown.

There is a further illegible ownership inscription, possibly early 19th-century, in the form of a monogram on folio 24r in red ink.

The manuscript previously belonged to Count Justin MacCarthy Reagh and is listed in the MacCarthy Reagh sale of 1815, with lot number 770.

The manuscript is listed in the 1819 Catalogue of the Library of the Faculty of Advocates.

There is an ownership inscription for the Library on folio 3r.
