Identifier: Adv.MS.19.2.13

Scope and Contents

Late 15th-century manuscript produced in Italy containing 'Il Ninfale', or 'The Nymph of Fiesole', of Giovanni Boccaccio, written in ottava rima.

The manuscript is the work of one scribe, written in an Italian round hand.

Balduino states that the manuscript is incomplete in places and not arranged in the correct order.

The work starts on folio 2r and runs to folio 94r.

The colophon on folio 94r reads: 'Finito ellibro chiamato ninfale'.

Beneath this is a later inscription, probably of the 16th century, which probably reads: 'inparerete qui muse aconporre se poeti volete esere chiamati evibisogna li sustar e raccorre'. This hand is also present in the lower margins of folios 2r and 3r where moralistic verses have been inscribed.

On folio 94v is a fragment of a work which begins: 'Chiromansia de tichasso da cerasarj mantovano dal proprio esenprare vulgare tradutta adinstantia demagnificho veneto pratricio domino sagerio MDXXIIII'. This fragment is in the hand which provided the verses on folios 2r, 3r, and 94r.

The manuscript is not decorated except for an elaborate plain penwork initial on folio 1r with grapes and floral designs extending into the margin. The colour of the ink suggests that this decoration was added by the 16th-century hand. The first letter of each stanza is in plain ink, slightly enlarged and placed in the margin.

On the pastedown of the front board are library inscriptions and a sticker which reads: '45..*'.

On the verso of folio ii is an 18th-century inscription detailing the manuscript's previous ownership.

Each folio has been lined and ruled in red, recto and verso.

Pricking is visible in the lower margin for the vertical lines.

Horizontal catchwords are present on the following folios: 11v, 20v, 50v, 60v (vertical), 70v, 80v, 90v.

Quire signatures in the form of Arabic numerals are present in the upper left corner of the following folios: 12r, 21r, 51r, 61r, 71r, 81r, 91r.

Arrangement

i-ii + 94 + iii-iv folios.

The foliation is modern Library foliation.

Balduino (1965) records 101 folios, but this would appear to be incorrect. The 19th-century folio catalogue records 94 folios which corresponds with the current arrangement of the manuscript.

Custodial History

There are erased ownership inscriptions and an obliterated coat of arms on the recto and verso sides of folio 1r. The latest one reads: 'Domino francho di domenicho dicharlo demidicj nobilissimo fiorentino perfarvi intender chome e vostro piero da bagliano adi.'

This volume possibly formed part of the collection of Louis César de La Baume Le Blanc, duc de la Vallière and is number 3613 in his sale of 1767. A note on the verso of folio ii attests to this ownership. The manuscript was probably bought at this sale by the Library of the Faculty of Advocates and was listed in the Library catalogue of circa 1796.

There are ownership inscriptions for the Library on the rectos of folios ii and 2.

The previous shelfmark assigned to the manuscript by the Library of the Faculty of Advocates is present on the recto of folio ii, '[Jo.Bal.]3.13.', since superseded.

Physical Description

Paper.

The binding is probably from the late 18th century and is of brown marbled paper covering cardboard with a quarter back of calf. There is a brown buckram dust flap over the head end. The manuscript was rebacked in 1938 by Oliver and Boyd. The new back has raised bands and gold tooling for the library stamp, shelfmark, and title which reads: 'IL NINFALE BOCCACIO'.

The paper is watermarked but the design is unclear and obscured by the binding.
