Scope and Contents

Manuscript produced in Scotland containing Church offices; a calendar; obituaries of benefactors; a rental of the hospital of St Anthony, Leith; and a rental of Newhaven.

The manuscript appears to be the work of two separate hands executed at different times. The earlier part of the work is of the 15th century. From folio 19r onwards the hand can be attributed to the mid-16th century.

The contents are as follows:

Flyleaves with shelfmark inscriptions. Folios i-ii.

16th-century inscription, 'The rental buke of sanct anthonis and newhavin coverit with broun lethir'. Folio 1r. Folio 1v is blank.

It begins with King James I and also incorporates prayers for James Kennedy, bishop of St Andrews, and Sir Robert Logan of Restalrig, 'our fowndour'. Folios 5r-8v (folio 6 is blank).

Folio 9 is blank but is lined recto and verso.

A calendar with no feasts marked, but containing obituaries of the benefactors from 1404-1528. Each day of the week is indicated by a different letter. There are 24 entries. The entries dated 1521 and 1528 are later insertions. In Latin. Folios 10r-17r.

Rental of St Anthony, Leith. 'Thir ar ye an[n]uellis of Leith p[er]tenand to ye place of sanct Anthon[is] ȝerlye'. In Scots. Folios 17v-18v.

Rental of Newhaven, 1546. 'Rentale portus gracie ab[i]s vocat by new havyne extract ac pr[i]m[o] et 2o octobris in anno xlvi'. The Black Friars of Edinburgh are mentioned repeatedly in the rental. This portion of the manuscript is by a different hand and is damaged by damp. In Latin. Folios 19r-23v.

Illegible inscriptions, probably relating to the rental of Newhaven. Folio 24r.

Folio 24v is blank.

Folios 2r-17r are decorated with initials in blue and red with blue and red penwork. Capitals and other letters are stroked with blue or red. The capital for the December heading has been ornamented with a grotesque. Folios 17v-24v do not have decoration.

The recto and verso sides of the folios have been lined, although this is inconsistent towards the beginning and end of the volume.

There is evidence of contemporary repairs to the vellum.

Physical Description

Vellum.

The binding is brown leather and is probably of the 16th century. The front and back covers both have intricate blind-tooled designs within centre panels. In the centre there is a nimbed Christ with two figures seated below on either side. Above both of these figures there are the heads of two further figures. Around this centre panel is a complete border. The top part of this border has a representation of the annunciation, with the Angel Gabriel kneeling on the left with a rod and scroll which reads 'gracia plena'. To the right is the Virgin, nimbed and kneeling at a desk, with a lily pot in the centre between the two figures. The rest of the border has scenes of hunting, hawking, and herding. The whole design is unfortunately much defaced by usage. There are 4 holes in the back and front covers, which indicates that there may have been metal bosses. The back has raised bands and the remnants of a sticker on the tail end.
