 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.72.2.4

Scope and Contents

The scribe (except page 44) of the manuscript is Séamus Ó Maolruanaigh. Marginalia in his hand, both Roman and Gaelic, are to be found on the flyleaf, on page 1 (Page 1, line 5 ‘James’; the lower three-eighths of the folio has been torn out, leaving ‘[ ] his hand and seal’ in margin), page 3, page 4 (‘Semus o ionnraic liom mar an geadna mar amhrn’), page 11, page 15 (‘[Se]mus ua Maolruadhneadh a labhar ⁊ a laimh / a n-aois an tidh’), page 17 (‘James M’ twice, with an intervening 6-line scrawl including the name Ribbard Purtail), page 25, and page 88. There are other notes on the flyleaf (‘John [ ]’), on page 5 (‘I promis to pay unto Thomas Bryan’), page 15 (‘William Branagan Lishane [ ]’), and page 88. By the 19th century several leaves were removed from the end. Still forming a flyleaf is the remaining portion of a Kilkenny newspaper of 1757 used in the original binding.

Custodial History

Formerly Gaelic MS.LIV.

The manuscript was obtained by Patrick Turner during 1798-1802 ‘from a woollen spinner whose name he cannot now recollect in Carrickonsuir in the county of Tiperara’ (Ingliston MS. A.i.15 (g)). Scribbles of Turner’s appear on pages 28, 29 (‘Paddy from Cork’), and 38. The manuscript became number 1 of the four sold by him in 1809 to the Highland Society of Scotland, through John Campbell, Justice of the Peace, the Society’s Translator; the final page, page 88, is inscribed ‘No.I.’, signed by Turner and initialled by Campbell. In 1811-1812 the manuscript was examined and paginated by Ewen MacLachlan, whose description of it is in Adv.MS.72.3.4, pages 68-71; his handwriting appears on the flyleaf and on page 88.

The manuscript was deposited in the Advocates Library in 1850. It is the property of the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland.

Transferred, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the National Library of Scotland on its foundation.
