Photographic copies of some family papers of Mr and Mrs Thomas Adams, Alloway, relating chiefly to Mrs Adams’ great-great-uncle, the Reverend Donald Stewart (1803-1831).

Scope and Contents

The Reverend Donald Stewart, a native of the Loch Earn district of Perthshire, was a minister of St Mark’s, Demerara, from his arrival 29 April 1831 to his death seven months later.

The contents are as follows.

(i) Lease of Lednascriden, Balquhidder, 1776 (folio 1);

(ii) Letter of Donald Stewart, Georgetown, 30 April 1831, to his father and brother, both John Stewart, Findglen, Loch Earn. A further letter, dated Georgetown, 2 May 1831, is cross-written on the first. With typed transcripts (folio 5);

(iii) Letter of Donald Stewart, Manse of St Mark’s, 20 June 1831, to the same. The part to the father (folios 15-16) is in Gaelic and includes a sketch of the Manse (folio 14);

(iv) Translation into English of the Gaelic part of the above, by Murdo MacLeod, Edinburgh (autograph and typescript); folio 26, typed transcript of the rest (folio 18);

(v) Two photographs of Donald Stewart’s grave at Georgetown (folio 28);

(vi) Stewart family tree (folio 29);

(vii) Account by Mr Thomas Adams and his son Stewart of the former’s great-great-grandmother, Mrs Ann McKinlay (died 1891), resident nurse in St Kilda circa 1884. With her diploma and photograph of islanders. Cf. CMJ (New Series), volume 13, page 60.
