Scope and Contents

The Edinburgh People’s Festival (EPF) was founded in 2002 by Colin Fox as a ‘more accessible and inclusive cultural alternative’ to the Edinburgh International Festival. It presented a series of plays, lectures, concerts, pageants, ceilidhs, and art exhibitions in different venues around the city of Edinburgh in August and throughout the year until 2018. The EPF was established in part as a tribute to the festival of the same name organised by the Edinburgh Labour Festival Committee, 1951-1954, led by Hamish Henderson in collaboration with other artists, trade unionists, and left-wing activists; both were inspired by Antonio Gramsci’s ideas on popular culture.

The archive contains papers relating to administration and event planning; Organising Committee meeting minutes and correspondence; press releases and press cuttings; photographs; a series of Colin Fox’s correspondence and notes compiled while Chairman of the EPF; and a born-digital archive of graphics and documents. The majority of the collection dates from 2007-2018.
