 Item
Identifier: Acc.14223

Content Description

A volume of sermons, lectures, prophecies and anecdotes of covenanting ministers, copied from various sources. The compiler was William Wilson, who according to an inscription in the front of the volume was schoolmaster in Broomerside, Douglas, and afterwards in Park, Douglas. He was the author of 'Some select meditations, in spiritual songs. Composed mostly from experience' ([Edinburgh], 1759), in which he offers, in verse, his views on Scotland's spiritual state, and his own.

The volume is dated "anno Christi MDCCXX" on p. 215, and William Wilson signs in three places, dated Park, 7 July, 30 July and 9 August 1720 respectively (pp. 356, 425 and 476). The 'Spiritual meditations' make reference to his leaving Park in 1723, and further evidence in the book suggests that he died between 1743 and its publication in 1759.

A marginal note on p. 388, not in Wilson's hand, is dated 1744.

The volume contains:

Sermons by William Guthrie. Pages 9-149.

A sermon by John Kid, East Munkland, preached on 23 November 1678. Pages 149-154.

Sermons and lectures by Donald Cargill, with information and anecdotes stated to be transcribed from a life of Cargill written by Sir Robert Hamilton of Preston (d. 1701), whose manuscript Wilson says in now in his custody. Pages 154-356.

Sermons by Richard Cameron, and transcript of a prediction that he made. Pages 357-425.

Sermons, a lecture and a prophecy by James Renwick. Pages 426-476.

Sermon by an unidentified preacher on Exodus 10.26, dated June 1661. Pages 477-492.

Sermon preached by G.S., dated 1688. Pages 492-522.

Two sermons by Michael Bruce, the second incomplete. Pages 523-546.
