Excerpts made in 1748 from the 14th-century register of the Abbey of Holme Cultram, Cumbria.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.34.1.4

Scope and Contents

A transcript of 56 charters of the Abbey of Holme Cultram, a Cistercian monastery founded by monks from Melrose in 1150, in what was at the time Scottish territory. The charters selected for transcription concern Scottish lands or were granted by Scottish persons. Further charters are calendared at the back of the volume. The original chartulary of the late 13th century is held in the Cumbria Record Office, Carlisle.

The transcriber, who signs his name on the title page and on p. 51, was John Goldie of Craigmure, Commissioner of Dumfries (1708-1776).

The volume is 33 x 21 cm in size and paginated 1-84 by the scribe; this is followed by an unpaginated table of contents and some blank pages.

The contents are:

Transcripts of charters, numbered I-LVI, and headed by the scribe: "Excerpta de registro abbatiae de Holmcultran in Cumbria cura et studio Joannes Goldij de Craigmure officialis Dumfrisiensis. 1748." Pages 1-50.

Note by Goldie to explain his work: "The charters written upon the fifty preceding pages were carefully copied by me ... from a book written on vellom and lent to me by my worthy friend Mr Joseph Nicolson of Hawksdale nephew to the Rt Reverend William Nicolson Bishop of Carlisle, intituled Registrum de Holm. The book itself is very small, contains two hundred and eighty four pages, and for the most part is written in very fair characters. The above charters are granted by Scotsmen or relate to lands lying in Scotland." Page 51.

Titles and some transcriptions of further charters in the register relating to lands in England and Ireland which, as Goldie states (p. 51) "were too tedious to transcribe, and I could get none here that could read it so distinctly as to do it for me, and therefore the titles of these charters and deeds only follow except that when the witnesses names are insert, (which, unluckily, is but seldom) I will copy them." Pages 52-84.

Table of contents. Pages [85]-[88].

The final four pages are blank except for a border drawn in light red ink.
