Three letters of Cosmo Innes.
Content Description
Three letters of Cosmo Innes, as follows:
(i) Letter to Dr John Thomson, George Street, Edinburgh, seeking his advice on the health of his brother-in-law Hugh Rose, 21st of Kilravock (1808-1847), who was at that point planning to accept an appointment in the Indian civil service. Dated Kilravock Castle, 3 October 1827.
(ii) Letter to an unnamed recipient, probably David Douglas of the printing house Edmonston & Douglas. Requesting him to send proofs of his 'Sketches' for Innes to work on. Innes's book 'Scotland in the Middle Ages. Sketches of early Scotch history and social progress' was published by Edmonston & Douglas, Edinburgh, in 1860. Undated, but probably 1859 or 1860.
(iii) Letter to David Douglas, requesting his help to supply his acquaintance James Smith with reading material. Innes is paying for Smith (born 1839 in Rafford, Moray), whose health had declined while working in a paraffin oil factory, to be sent to a warmer climate for the winter. James Smith is stated to have begun a work on Gaelic literature and history, while his younger brother Hugh (b. 1840) is mentioned as having written a manuscript volume of poetry that Douglas saw previously. Dated "In Court" [Edinurgh], 4 November 1863.
