Scope and Contents

Grange Cricket Club was formed in 1832, and takes its name from the Grange area of Edinburgh where the members first played. The club moved to its present Raeburn Place premises in 1872. Grange Cricket Club is notable as one of the oldest and most successful of Scottish cricket clubs, and also as the host of numerous international matches. In 1849, the club organised the first ‘Grand Match’ staged in Scotland when a Scotland Twenty-two faced an All England XI. Another England XI, including W G Grace, played at Raeburn Place against Eighteen Gentlemen of Edinburgh in 1877. Matches against major touring sides continue to be held at Raeburn Place.

The score books here are part of the same series that are held in Acc.11270/1-11A. The score books for matches dated 1848-1866 are not original score books, but were created from the research of Sandy Thorburn, the Club Historian. The information in these largely came from press reports, which in the early days of Scottish Cricket could be very brief. As a consequnce, the information in these volumes is not as detailed as those in the other score books.

The Minute Book relates to the Scottish Cricket Union that was established in 1879 and disbanded in 1883. The minute book also includes minutes of meetings of club representatives of cricket clubs in Scotland between 1884-1907. These meetings eventually led to the formation of a new Scottish Cricket Union in 1908.
