Minute book of the Selkirk mission to Trinidad
Scope and Contents
Minute book, 1839-1849, giving an account of the efforts of the United Presbyterian Church of Selkirk to raise funds in order to sponsor and support George Brodie as a missionary in Trinidad.
Brodie expressed his wish to carry out overseas mission work, and the Selkirk presbytery convened a committee to assess the feasibility of raising funds to support his calling. It was calculated that Brodie could be supported and carry out his work on £40 per annum, and a Society was constituted with a view to raising the required capital. By December 1839, the necessary funds had been raised and Brodie was ordained as a missionary and left for Trinidad, where he established a mission at Arouca.
The mission was transferred to the United Presbyterian Church in 1848.
