Scope and Contents

Sermons, 1876-1896 and undated, of Rev Robert Mitchell Beedie, missionary in Calabar, Nigeria.

Robert Mitchell Beedie was born in 1841 in Aberdeenshire. A carpenter by trade in Scotland, Beedie joined the United Presbyterian mission, and entered Old Calabar in 1873 at Ikorofiong, the furthest up-river station of the mission. Beedie was ordained in 1878, and in 1884, was transferred to Duke Town on the banks of the Calabar river. He died in 1897.

The papers consist of around 100 sermons and notes, around half of which are dated, and most of which appear to have been written and delivered during his ministry at Duke Town. In addition to teachings from the Bible, Beedie does comment on the existence of slavery and attempts to eradicate it through the development of commerce, the murder of twins, and other forms of human sacrifice prevalent in the area in the early days of mission to Calabar. Some of the undated papers appear to be talks delivered whilst on furlough in Scotland, and defend missions in general, and activity in Calabar in particular.
