Letters and other papers, 1887-1920, of the Reid and King families, relating to the First World War and life in Australia.
Scope and Contents
Letters and other papers, 1887-1920, of the Reid and King families. The papers consist of an Army pay book, 1887-1893, of Private James Reid, 2nd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders; a letter from Andrew Reid to his parents, 16 December [1916], describing his experiences on the Somme front during the First World War; 2 letters, 6 January 1918, of Mary King (nee Reid) to her mother, and to her sister, sent from New South Wales, Australia; a photograph of Mary with her husband, Andrew King, and children, Harry, William and Andrew, c. 1918; and a steamer ticket, 1920, and photograph of R.M.S. Orvieto, on which the family returned to Scotland.
Mary King, nee Reid, emigrated to New South Wales, Australia, with her husband Andrew during the First World War. The Kings disliked their new environment, and were eager to return to Scotland but were forced to remain in Australia as they were unable to secure return transport due to the war. They finally returned in 1920. James and Andrew Reid were Mary`s brothers.
