Letter of Arise Ministeries and Churches Together in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, to the churches, civic leaders and all the people of Scotland.
Scope and Contents
The letter is an apology to the people of Scotland from the town of Huntingdon, an apology felt necessary due to Huntingdon being the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell. The letter proclaims a desire to bring ‘healing and reconciliation to the Cromwell part of our history’. In particular the letter refers to the heavy casualties and very poor treatment of Scottish soldiers after defeat at the Battle of Dunbar in 1650, including those sold as bonded labour to Virginia and the Caribbean.
The letter is signed by a number of church leaders: Shirley Bowers, Arise Ministeries; Rev Scott Watts, Pastor; Rev. Kevin Burdett, Trinity Free Church; Rev. Mark Hibs-Powels, Advisor; David Soldan, Sec. Churches Together Huntingdon Area; Rev. David Kins, Methodist Minister; Rev. Andrew Mitton, Huntingdon Anglican Town Centre Churches; Rev. N. Kearney, R.C Parish Priest; John E. Martin, Pastor (Retired).
