Record of interview between Emperor William II of Germany and Sir Robert Bruce Lockhart, with other related papers.
Scope and Contents
A small collection of papers and photographs, relating to an interview in 1929 by Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart, diplomat and author (1887-1970), with the ex-Kaiser of Germany, Wilhelm II, and to a subsequent visit, 1939, to the Kaiser and his wife at Doorn, in the Netherlands.
The contents are as follows:
1. A paper headed, ' "D". Second Interview with the Kaiser, 1929. Written by himself.' The questions put to Wilhelm II (in typescript) were submitted by Bruce Lockhart, and the answers by the ex-Kaiser are written in his own hand. The interviews were conducted by Lockhart as a columnist of Lord Beverbrook's London Evening Standard, and was a journalistic scoop, as the first English interview with the exiled Kaiser.
2. New Year card with autograph note of greetings (in English) from the Kaiser to Bruce Lockhart, 1 January 1939.
3. A letter, Doorn, 18 August 1939 of the Kaiser's second wife, Hermine, to Bruce Lockhart, thanking him for his visit, and the gift of a basket of flowers.
4. Signed photograph of the Kaiser, dated Doorn, 16 August 1939.
