Five French workers' record books.
Scope and Contents
Five French Workers’ record books of various communes in the département of the
Loire, arrondissement of St. Êtienne, 1837, 1856, 1867, 1876, with entries up to 1894.
The books contain printed extracts of the law relating to employees, and manuscript
details of individual workers.
Employers recorded the arrival and departure of each employee in his or her livret, and
the employee had to carry and show the book to confirm his release from his previous
employment; changes were certified by the mairie [mayor’s office] of the commune.
