Scope and Contents In the original inventory (a copy of which is at MS.3581, folios 6-7) signed by Thomas Ruddiman, then Underkeeper of the Library, the papers are listed in thirty-eight bundles. Most of these were arranged and bound during the period 1820-1849. Of the remainder, Adv.MSS.19.1.24 and 29.2.9a were bound in 1896, when it was not realised that Adv.MS.19.1.24 belonged to the collection. Scope and Contents The contents of the volume are as follows:(i) Extracts, 1797, in the hand of the chief clerk, Robert Lemon, from the `Rotuli Scotiae` kept in the Tower of London (cf. folio 282). The extracts relate to the ecclesiastical antiquities of Scotland. The manuscripts were published, in two volumes, in 1814 and 1819. Correspondence and papers of Lieutenant-General G H Hutton concerning his researches into the ecclesiastical antiquities of Scotland.

Scope and Contents The correspondence consists of letters to Hutton from various correspondents, many of whom were parish ministers to whom he had written asking for information; the papers consist of transcripts of charters and other formal documents, extracts from cartularies and other registers, and descriptions, sketches, plans and elevations of monasteries and other religious buildings. Hutton transcripts. A collection of transcripts of the cartularies of Aberdeen Cathedral (Adv.MS.20.3.1) and Newbattle Abbey (Adv.MS.20.3.3) and of charters and other formal documents, many of which are extracts from other cartularies, of and concerning several of the medieval dioceses and religious houses of Scotland.

Scope and Contents

Most of these transcripts and extracts, which were made between circa 1794 and circa 1824, are in the hand of Lieutenant-General G H Hutton: most of the rest are in the same hand as Adv.MS.9A.1.4. Many of the transcripts were made from originals and copies in possession of William Maule of Panmure, who was created Baron Panmure in 1831: many of the rest were copied from documents in possession of Thomas Thomson and at the Scottish Record Office, General Register House.

Maxwell of Monreith papers, comprising family and estate correspondence, financial papers, and bound estate papers; with early charters of Maxwells and of Blair of Adamton. Includes general and literary correspondence, and some literary manuscripts, of Sir Herbert Maxwell.

Scope and Contents This archive constitutes the bulk of the surviving family and estate papers of the Maxwells of Monreith. It gives a clear picture of Maxwell family life, and the running of the Monreith estate from the early 18th century to 1920, with some later estate material. Some of the papers go back to the early 17th century, but the formal estate books begin in 1779, and from then on increase steadily in number and comprehensiveness until from 1893 to 1920 there is scarcely a detail of estate...

Scope and Contents

The largest groups consist of lists of abbreviations used in mediaeval documents (folios 64, 71-111) and copies of various forms of letters (folios 65-69); most of the remaining papers consist of notes on various subjects and transcripts of unrelated documents. An engraved facsimile, 1771, of a charter of William the Lion has been added to the papers (folio 9).
