Content Description
The archive of the Royal Celtic Society, founded in 1820 as the Celtic Society, and bearing its 'Royal' designation since 1873. Among the founder members were Captain William Mackenzie of Gruinard, Sir David Stewart of Garth and Sir Walter Scott, the Society's first vice president.
The archive contains minute books, financial records, membership lists, correspondence, files on the Society's history and constitution, photographs, newspaper cuttings and miscellaneous matter.

The contents are as follows:
(i) Laws of the Society. (Folio 1.) (ii) List of meetings for each session, with the name of the speaker and the title of his 'discourse', November 1764–January 1771 (folio 3 verso). Occasionally the elections of new members or the names of absentees are recorded. 'There is a gap in the Records for the next 5 years, and the only information we have of their Transactions during the years 1771 and 1773 is from a loose jotting, of which the following is a copy'...
