Apparently incomplete collection of correspondence and papers of William Marshall and of members of his family, together with related papers compiled by David J Mackenzie, Sheriff-substitute of Glasgow.

Scope and Contents

William Marshall, who was factor to the Duke of Gordon, was known in his own day as a Scottish fiddler and composer of strathspeys, and an inventor. The collection contains almost nothing of musical interest, and the largest single part consists of letters and copies of letters of his sons whilst on active service in India and in the Peninsular War, written to him and to other members of the family.

Collection of manuscript material transferred from printed theses collection, 1637-late 19th century, chiefly consisting of German academic papers, but including a small cache of Scottish legal papers, 19th century.

There are letters and papers of Mary Haldane’s sisters Jane and Elizabeth, and her brother Sir John Burdon-Sanderson, Baronet, and his wife, Ghetal, née Herschell. There are also a few letters and papers of Mrs Haldane's daughter Elizabeth S Haldane, and collections of press-cuttings relating to her son Richard, Viscount Haldane.

Correspondence of Thomas Graham is chiefly with his factor, Henry Burt, concerning his estate of Balgowan, but includes also some letters from eminent friends and acquaintances not included in MSS.3590-3645. There are also papers of Mrs M E Maxtone Graham concerning the publication of her book ‘The beautiful Mrs Graham’, and typescript material and correspondence concerning a projected book on Lord Lynedoch.

Scope and Contents

Robert Cadell (1788-1849) was the partner of Archibald Constable, and, after the dissolution of that partnership in 1825, the sole publisher of Walter Scott's novels. His papers reflect his personal and business relations with Scott and other authors, as well as his family affairs.

Scope and Contents Tom Weir is probably best known for his long-running STV series ‘Weir’s Way’. He was born in Glasgow and served in the Royal Artillery during World War II. He worked as a surveyor for the Ordnance Survey before embarking on the career that was to make him a household name. Tom Weir is also notable as a mountaineer. The notebook contains prose translations of most of Horace's ‘Odes and Epodes’ (inverted folio 3, folio 1 verso), a poem entitled "The believer's dowry" with other verses and notes of a religious nature (folio 4), and some medical recipes (folio 27 verso).
